Trim system boosts fuel efficiency

Japan's mitsui osk Lines (MOL), in conjunction with the Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen) Inc, has developed an optimum trim system for a vessel's hull. A pilot test of the new system, using a 6400-unit car carrier as the trials ship, has shown an increase of up to 4% in fuel efficiency can be achieved compared to that by a conventionally operated vessel. This fuel saving, in turn, represent a significant reduction in CO_2 emissions.
