Schottel propelled tugs for Post-Panamax era

The Panama Canal Authority has ordered Schottel propulsion systems for 14 tractor tugs and 13 ASD tugs under construction. The vessels are to assist Post-Panamax ships upon completion of the lock expansion at the Panama Canal. The tractor tugs, which are significantly bigger than ASD vessels, will have a bollard pull of 85 tons, length of 28.9m and a width of 13.5m. Each will be equipped with two Schottel SRP 2020 Rudderpro-pellers (each with 2,330kW of input power) and will replace use of locomotives at the new Atlantic locks.
