Monitoring failure: Convincing company management of the value of condition monitoring and condition-based maintenance is the real challenge, conference hears

The single biggest challenge to adoption of condition monitoring (CM) technology and condition based maintenance (CBM) programmes is reluctance from company management-this was the overarching message to emerge from two days of intense debate at the IMarEST's 5th CBM conference in early-December. "CBM is such an obvious thing to do, that I can't believe that people still argue about it. It's a no-brainer!" declared keynote speaker Martin Stopford, president of Clarkson's Research. "The real problem is the business model that shipping has today, whereby decisions are made by people that have a financial background but no technical knowledge."
