Broken lifeline: Poor maintenance and blase work practices turned a routine voyage into a tragedy for barge Arctic Lift / when a strained tow wire caused a brake drum to shatter, sending metal shards into a nearby deckhand
On 10 May 2013 the barge Arctic Lift I, which was carrying a cargo of steel rebar, capsized while undertow by the tug Western Tugger, 33 nautical miles southwest of Newfoundland, Canada. The strain put on the tow wire caused an auxiliary brake drum on the tow winch to shatter, leaving a nearby crew member with fatal injuries.
