Breaking the chain: Vessels owners are using kit ostensibly designed to recover fuel from waste oil to bring a halt to the shady business of unofficial 'fuel recycling'

Coined by the science-fiction writer William Gibson, 'the street finds its own uses for things' has become a widely quoted aphorism to describe the sometimes unexpected ways people find to use new technology. A waste separation system developed by Alfa Laval was intended to let ship owners and operators reuse the HFO fraction of waste oil -typically 1-2% of a vessel's fuel consumption. As it turns out, recovering fuel is only one reason customers are buying it. In two years Alfa Laval has sold over 160 PureDry units. Customers include by Carnival Corporation, Dynacom, Frontline, Norwegian Cruise Line, Spliethoff, Stena and more. It has been selected for some of the industry's more notable vessels including the giant boxship MSC Oscar and Petrofac's JSD 6000 for deep-sea pipe laying.
