Shortages in crew navigation skills cause ship accidents

The risks of ecdis error and shortages in navigation knowledge have been highlighted by the UK P&I Club in a report. The marine insurance group said in January this year that ships could be at risk if officers of the watch were not trained sufficiently in the use of ecdis and in what to do if this key navigation aid fails. Despite this guidance, and guidelines issued in the past, ship groundings and collisions are still happening regularly, demonstrating that the navigation risks remain and that crew are not trained sufficiently in electronic navigation systems.
