LA «TECHNIQUE » COMME ACTIVITÉ OU COMME REPRÉSENTATION PARTAGÉE

Tout comme dans le cas de l'étude d'une tribu lointaine, se faire accepter au sein d'une division de R&D d'un groupe de haute technologie requiert le long apprentissage d'un langage, de représentations et d'implicites partagés. Dans ce monde d'ingénieurs, la « technique » apparaît à l'ethnographe comme un langage en même temps que l'élément clé du lien social. En se l'appropriant, en le confrontant aux pratiques et aux carrières des ingénieurs de développement, l'ethnologue s'aperçoit que la « technique », omniprésente dans les discours, est un objet fuyant tant dans le travail que dans les trajectoires individuelles. À la fois individuelle et collective, activité productive et facteur d'intégration sociale articulant une profession, une entreprise et un groupe projet, la « technique » est l'élément central de l'imaginaire des ingénieurs de développement.%As in the case of someone studying a distant tribe, being accepted in a big technology firm's R&D division requires a long phase of learning the language, ideas and implicitly shared assumptions. In this world of engineers, "techniques" are a language and, at the same time, the key element in social bonds. By appropriating this language and measuring it against the practices and careers of research engineers, the field-worker came to see that "techniques", omnipresent in words, are elusive in actual work and in individual career trajectories. Both individual and collective, both a productive activity and a factor of social integration articulating a profession, a company and a group project, techniques are the key element in the mental world of engineers in Research and Development.
