There were days when the word "Knitting' in India was associated with production of undergarments and Hosiery e.g. Banian Ganji and socks etc. But since last few years knitting and knitted fabrics are used in manufacturing Fashion Garments and even it may also venture to manufacture formal wears. Knit-manufacturers and processors in India, are continuously up-dating their techniques to meet quality requirements, demanded in international market for fashion garments. Knitted fabrics containing elastomeric fibres e.g. 'Lycra' have become very popular, not because of their functionality but more because of better 'comforts' and 'fitting' which are main criteria of fashion garments processing of such knitted fabrics is challenging for Indian knit-processors because elastic behaviour of elastane gets strongly affected by all processing sequence right from pre-treatment to finishing. In case of synthetics knits and blended textiles containing elastane processing is still more difficult due to heat-setting process. Heat setting of knits is very tricky and highly skilled job. As processing of such knits is highly specialised, this article deals with the key factors involved in processing and explains various precautions and process parameters.
