Quality improvement on Jute and Jute cotton materials using enzyme treatment and natural dyeing

Among the natural fibers jute is considered important for the production of diversified decorative products other than garments. The physical and chemical properties of jute give good characters on the products manufactured from them. However, jute also has some drawbacks like harshness and stiffness that requires some chemical treatments in order to make them soft and flexible. Enzyme is utilized for the treatment on jute and jute blended materials so that the drawbacks of jute could be minimized. Nowadays, jute plays an important role in the export market based on its biodegradable and renewable original character. The processed / enzyme treated jute and the blended materials could be selectively dyed with some of the natural dyes. The involvement of natural sources for the dyeing process is highly desired due to its eco friendly nature and other added characters on the materials. Many research works have been carried out on the application of natural dyes on textiles in the recent decade. However, all the treatments are not successful because of the lack of the desired properties such as reproduction of shades, and fastness properties. Still natural dyes are exploring high value on the textiles for its basic original character. In this work, it is decided to work on the jute and jute blended fabrics treated with enzyme followed by natural dyeing. The outcome shows good effect on the natural dyed materials.
