Surgical gowns are used as protection from surgical microorganisms. The present paper envisages the product classification and the various test methods used for performance study. Clothing is used for protection against particle loaded liquids in many working environments. An important field is the operating theatre, where surgical gowns and drapes need to serve as a barrier between infection source and clinical personnel as well as providing satisfactory wearing comfort. Surgical apparel is identified as a medical device intended to be worn by operating room personnel during surgical procedures to protect both the surgical patients and operating room personnel from transfer of microorganisms, body fluids, and particulate material.
