Ship-Source Oil Pollution Fund Highlights of 30th anniversary conference

The Ship-source Oil Pollution Fund (the Fund) celebrated its 30th anniversary on May 28. This event in Ottawa brought together a record number of participants, from all regions of the country and abroad, who attended in person or via the Web - a testament to the Fund's extensive network of local, national and international stakeholders and experts. By compensating victims of ship-source oil pollution in a timely, effective and appropriate manner, while respecting the polluter-pays principle, the Fund has brought significant benefits to Canadians over the years, and will continue to do so. The Fund provides daily compensation to victims of small and medium incidents that regularly occur in Canadian waters. Of the 413 claims received by the Fund: 1.Three-quarters of these incidents were caused by fishing vessels, wrecks and abandoned vessels, and spills of unknown origin. 2.The largest amount was paid for the Chaulk Determination incident in Trois-Rivieres ($4.3 million), followed by the Marathassa incident in Vancouver ($2.4 million) and the Pender Lady incident in the Haida Gwaii Archipelago ($1.7 million). 3.60% of claims did not exceed $35,000. 4.The largest number of claims were submitted by the Canadian Coast Guard. 5.Half of the claims came from British Columbia, one-quarter from Quebec, and the rest mainly from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario.
