Air quality managers in coastal cities should consider theeffects of halogen emissions in the development of air qualitypolicies. Stratospheric ozone (O_3) depletion by halogencompounds is well known,1 but it is less well recognized thathalogens affect tropospheric O_3 concentrations. Brominecompounds are largely responsible for depletion of O_3within the Arctic boundary layer and over the Dead Sea.2In addition to coastal cities, inland cities may also be impactedby natural halogen emissions due to their effects onbackground O_3 concentrations.3 Therefore, natural halogenemissions should concern environmental managers.
