EPA Permitting Becoming More Innovative, Attorneys Say

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is finding ways to use digital information technology to make environmental permitting more effective, two senior EPA attorneys said at a law and policy conference in Washington last month. Aditi Prabhu, an attorney-adviser in the EPA general counsel’s office, said that it was a myth that the permit process “has to be old-school and bureaucratic,” adding that in some cases individual permits were “a useful tool for avoiding that trap” because they allowed regulators and permittees to “explore novel options.”
