Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in Oceanside, CA, recently switched from using petroleum diesel to a 20% blend of biodiesel to fuel its fleet, which includes 536 on-road diesel-powered nontactical vehicles, several portable diesel engines, 132 stationary diesel engines, and a diesel locomotive. This equipment is used to support a 125,000-acre facility with a population of nearly 40,000 marines and sailors. As such, nearly all types of equipment and vehicles in the Marine Corps inventory are located at this facility. The decision to switch to biodiesel was based on a desire to reduce the facility's petroleum consumption, while continuing to use its existing fleet and fueling infrastructure.
