Meeting the Challenge Achieving compliance with the new 1-hr SO_2 and NO_2 standards

In 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) adopted one-hour (1-hr) National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for nitrogen dioxide (NO_2) and sulfur dioxide (SO_2). Public health advocates supported the standards, but industry worried about the costs and feasibility of meeting them. Articles in the July 2013 issue of EM addressed the new near-roadway air quality monitoring network for NO_2. Articles in this issue focus on delays in implementing the SO_2 standard, techniques for using air quality models to assess compliance with the standards, and advances in controls to reduce emissions of NO_2 and SO_2.
