We've begun the process of building a solution to a systems administration problem by using and combining several command-line tools. We used tools like ioreg, grep, and cut to get the information we needed, connecting them together using UNIX pipes. You could extend the solution using additional command-line tools like mail and curl to further customize the solution to meet your needs.
