Given its collaboration, programmability, and security strengths, Lotus Notes is a natural choice for secure workflow applications. In this tip, I show you how to create a basic framework for document workflow. I'll begin with the Action buttons in the form you use to process the document through each stage or status. You should apply the appropriate security to each Action, most likely using Access Control List (ACL) roles and Hide-When formulas to display or hide the Action, depending on the document status and the user's role or access level. Each Action sets (or tries to set, because, after all, validation may fail) the document to a different status, so you may have Actions labeled Submit, Approved, etc.
