Clear signs of progress in spite of challenges

While the economy isn't booming like it was in 2018, it's still chugging along at a pretty good clip. But, there are a few key freight indicators showing signs of distress. For example, freight railroad and intermodal markets are seeing year-to-date volumes dipping, even though the advance estimate for first quarter GDP growth was strong at 3.2%. Reasons for the declines on the rails vary, but the pricing environment remains steady for carriers as they continue to see decent returns. On top of that, many industry players are immersed in implementing precision scheduled railroading (PSR), with an eye on operational and efficiency gains top of mind.
