When Lithuania became an independent state after the First World War the railways inherited from former occupiers were mainly of standard gauge and operating with former Prussian (KPEV) locomotives and rolling stock. Some 750mm and 600mm narrow gauge lines were also taken over. The first new locos were supplied by Skoda of Pilsen (Czechoslovakia) to the existing G8~1 design and evidently the management were pleased with the workmanship as al1 further steam locomotives were also built at the Skoda works. Interestingly for such a small country, although the orders were only for a few locos of each class, every one was for a fresh design, tailored to Lithuanian specifications.
