Angaur is a small island; part of the state of Palau located north of Irian Jaya and east of the southern Philippines. It was previously part of the Caroline Islands. The island is roughly 5km in length, less than 4km wide and rises 8 to 10 metres above sea level. The island is densely wooded. Over the years guano had formed in between coral outcrops. Current and traditional population number has been around 200. Currently it is favoured as a popular surfing location and visits by Japanese and US ex-service personnel from WW2. A current controversial proposal for job creation is the establishment of a casino.
