Testing times for coatings and BWT suppliers

Operators want to know that the ballast water treatment (BWT) systems they install will be compatible with their ballast tank coatings for the life of the vessel. Of the three types of treatment system available, mechanical and physical do not need to be tested with coatings under current legislation, but chemically controlled systems, and those using active substances with the potential to degrade systems, do. Many treatment suppliers have carried out initial testing, but the processes have not yet been standardised.
