Construction of ships' ballast tanks is largely functional and very straightforward. Double bottoms or wing tanks, they are coated when built, water is pumped in and water is pumped out and often they are ignored from one docking to the next. Tank coatings, however, are very costly to repair in dry dock due to staging, blasting and cleaning, not to mention the cost of the coating itself. A breakdown in the coating on edges or seams can, if left, cause quick corrosion and pitting, eventually leading to holes, so taking care of the tank coatings should be high on every technical superintendent's list.
