'Erika 3' hits rough EU waters

The European Commission described its latest maritime safety package as a 'gift' to the IMO. But the measures have not been welcomed by national governments. The so-called 'Erika 3' package of EU maritime safety legislation is not getting a smooth passage through the Brussels institutions. As the third package of laws since the Erika oil spill disaster, this was designed originally by the European Commission to be a tidying-up exercise.
