The emergence of high-definition television (HDTV), IPTV, and video-on-demand services, along with the advent of peer-to-peer video applications, has placed a strain on the bandwidth requirements and operational ef-rnficiency of carrier networks. As the growth of these high-bandwidth services puts increasing demands on today's communication infrastructure, existing architectures and their underlying subsystems are proving costly and unmanageable.
