Noted mathematician and scientist Carl August Rudolph Steinmetz was born on April 9, 1865 in Breslau, Germany. Steinmetz lost his mother at a very young age, and was raised by his paternal grandmother. In 1882, Steinmetz was the only honor student to graduate from St. John's Gymnasium, where he studied classical Latin, Greek, French, Polish, Hebrew, chemistry, philosophy, and, most importantly, mathematics. He qualified for his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Breslau in 1888, but fled the city before receiving his degree because Bismarck's Germany was intolerant of his "socialist activi-ties."
