RESEARCH MATTERS: Occupancy Sensors: Are There Reliable Estimates of The Energy Savings?

One piece of good news is that occupancy sensors are becoming commonplace in new construction; recent estimates by one controls manufacturer indicate that they are now used in 60 percent of commercial projects. Energy-code provisions, the ease of installation in new construction and the known potential of energy savings will continue to increase the penetration of occupancy sensors in new construction. However, according to the Energy Information Agency (EIA, 1995), during the 1990s, new construction represented less than 10 percent of both buildings and floor space in the 1995 buildings stock, so it is important to also increase the widespread use of occupancy sensors in existing buildings.
