With lighting, sometimes less is more. The lighting for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts' LEED-Silver certified office building in Hingham, MA, was created with this mantra in mind. The facility's expansive glass facade and carefully placed fixtures maximize natural light, while bringing the outdoors in. Lighting designer Lisa Zidel (Lisa Zidel Lighting Design) and interior designer Jane Sullivan (Margulies & Associates) wanted to create "an organic and pure-looking environment" using natural lighting, says Zidel. Zidel accomplished this by choosing "clean, simple unobtrusive fixtures for general illumination, and dramatic, yet airy and ethereal custom fixtures in specialty areas." According to Sullivan, the concept of designing around the natural environment was driven by the client, "who wanted to create a great work place for its employees." To meet that goal, 95 percent of work and meeting spaces have access to daylight.
