Maybe those hoping to save the incandescent bulb have been going about it the wrong way. Maybe instead of a top-down, industry-driven approach, what's really needed is a bottom-up, grassroots effort-an old-fashioned citizen's revolt, instead of a dry position statement. That was the main take-away from Howard Brandston's keynote address at the Lights of Philadelphia conference in late September. Whether you agree or disagree with Brandston's position against the incandescent phase-out, it has been consistent and well-articulated over the past few years. At first, Brandston worked through traditional channels to voice his displeasure with what he viewed as the tepid industry response to the ban. In the spring of 2008, for example, he authored an open letter to the industry entitled "Where Are Our Leaders?" that appeared in several lighting periodicals.
