It's not unusual for a building to relate to its environment, but how about a chandelier? At the new Al Hitmi office complex in Doha, Qatar, a massive LED chandelier and art installation called Reflective Flow responds not only to the spatial demands of the complex's atrium, but also, quite literally, to its occupants, the weather outside and a whole host of other data, by changing content in relation to its surroundings. Using video-based technology, the approximately 126-ft-long, 20-ton chandelier displays a wide range of abstract content on more than 165,000 LEDs housed in approximately 2,300 custom optical crystals. The content is triggered by external cues, like the weather and amount of passersby, as well as by random snippets of information pulled off of Internet RSS feeds.
