In this new publication, Lighting for Driving, Peter Boyce manages to make a seemingly mundane topic highly engaging for readers. One is reminded of how complex the visual task of driving at night can be. This is of special concern for older adults, those with visual impairments and for persons traveling in vehicle-congested areas or in areas subject to human or wild animal crossings.rnThe author traces the history and current and future projections regarding illumination for vehicle operation and navigation. He provides accounts of early-to-recent innovations in the lighting devicesrnmounted within vehicles, the lighting mounted outside of vehicles, and the lighting fixtures installed on or near roads, bridges and other drivable areas. Boyce foresees a future that includes improvements in roadway lighting and smarter cars and roads. The potentially negative consequences of installing roadway lighting-including the creation of light pollution, increased carbon footprints and financial burdens-are also explored.
