By 2004, the precarious infrastructure of the UK's Blackpool tramway was on the point of collapse - threatening the system's future. With trams restricted to walking speed on some sections, running over bent and rusting rails and cracked paving, dire predictions saw the network going under unless it received a major cash injection. Temporary relief came in the form of Government money for 'emergency repairs'. This was followed by last year's announcement of the GBP101.67m modernisation scheme, including 16 new trams and transformed infrastructure.
