While we touched on this topic last issue with our article on oil, we want to cover it in more detail this month since it ties in so nicely with the preceding article on hanging an engine. Breaking in an engine is the common terminology we hear, but we want you to understand this is actually a bit of a misnomer and there are two distinct stages. There is one, the initial test for leaks, and break-in (best done in a test cell), and part two, run-in done by the owner during hours 2 or 3 to as much as 50 with the engine in the aircraft until oil use stabilizes.
