摘要

The use of modified cathode shape and inserts in the cathodernallow drastically redistributing the current density in thernaluminium liquid pool. As a result both the cathode voltagerndrop and the anode to cathode voltage drop can bernsignificantly decreased. Electrical modeling can easilyrnexplain the energy savings in the cathode. Magnetohydrodynamicrnmodeling shows why and how specificrnenergy can be saved in the anode to cathode distance. Thernenergy saving inside the cell depends on the cell initialrndesign but may exceed 1 kWh/kg Al.
