Object-oriented programming offers an alternative to the procedural programming techniques that previously dominated the database development realm. This programming model represents afundamentally different approach. Given the increasing acceptance and popularity of object-oriented development environments, it is important for those who develop applications within the library to be familiar with this technology. This article provides a basic introduction to the object-oriented programming paradigm, illustrating the concepts with a simple application relevant to the library environment.
