The uniqueness to this is that most are devoid of any commercial input. They are typically run and moderated by modelers, often as an aside to their normal profession. These forums allow modelers to discuss kit quality, engine preference, finish techniques, or whatever they desire with other modelers. They also provide a "watchdog" type atmosphere to help protect each other from getting taken advantage of and, at the same time, can provide a way to praise those who have risen above and beyond the call.
