This second title in Asimov's three-book "Galactic Empire" series-the entirety of which will be available from BBC Au-diobooks America in late 2010-revolves around a man with amnesia who may be the key to a planet's survival. A curious relic of 1950s sf, it actually reads more like a contemporary mystery or thriller. Like its pre-quel, The Stars, Like Dust (1951), it depicts gender roles in ways already laughably out-of-date, but its stronger plot renders it compelling enough to attract new audiences. Actor/singer Kevin T. Collins's narration is adequate; however, the thick accents of present-day ethnic groups he employs make it hard to remember that this story is set many millennia in the future. Nonetheless, sf fans will enjoy.
