A young trash-out worker photographs things left behind as he cleans houses from which people have been evicted. He's not what he seems to be. Meanwhile, squatters take over a building in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and artifacts from the past get a brush-up at the Hospital for Broken Things. Sound fanciful? From what I've read so far, it's more like a clear-eyed and muscular fable about tough economic times. Touted as a real change for the brilliant Auster and his breakout novel, with lucid and headlong writing that could actually get him the broader audience he deserves.
