With northern California as his palette, Australian-born landscape artist Trainor designs vast gardens that combine naturally occurring plants in a new and adventurous manner. This book, co-authored with freelance writer Heeger (contributing editor, Garden Design), presents his work as creating a union of person and place and of region and history, as well as offering a new view of these wild vistas. The book covers ten of Trainor's most ambitious gardens, and includes plans and excellent photographs. Although Trainor is neither an architect nor a naturalist, his extensive use of rocks and water is attractive, and he clearly knows and loves the land. Heeger's prose is often a bit overblown; instead of conveying the sometimes mythical quality of Trainor's works, the writing instead comes across as heavy-handed.
