Although the title of this work might mislead some potential readers, there is much more to Japan's war story than the disastrous WWII era: coverage in this volume begins circa 200 CE and ends in the 21st century. A guide in the front matter groups topics by period, and, separately, by subject (from "atrocities" through "martyrs" to "warrior tales" and the Yasukuni Shrine controversy). A cogent preface lays out major themes: tensions between centralized and local power, sacred and profane, nativism and openness to the outside, and rule by violence or by learning (and discusses the opportunists who merely manipulated these tensions).
