The challenge Located in a coastal New England city's cultural and historic districts, the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library consists of a four-story wooden house, built in 1764 and converted for library use in 1884, with WPA murals on the first and second floors. A two-story brick addition was constructed in 1913 and a three-story brick-faced addition in 1976. Other than the first floors, the three buildings do not align and can only be accessed within each building. Other issues include a lack of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, no central HVAC system, an inadequate number of electrical outlets, a valuable art collection hidden in a vault, and the sole public restrooms located on the lower level of the 1976 building. The library needs to incorporate all the existing spaces while preserving their historically significant features, possibly connecting them to the nearby city hall or Cape Ann Museum.
