Milton Glaser is a graphic designer whose iconic work has appeared on billboards, bumper stickers, and book, magazine, and album covers. He was the cofounder of New York magazine, designing many of its memorable covers, but his most well-known work is probably the "I Heart New York" slogan. Viewers who may not know his name will be surprised at how many of his works they have seen. Glaser himself, now in his 80s, is a likable, erudite, and fascinating subject. The documentary, which features interviews with colleagues and clients, is wise to spend most of its time on the man himself, as he talks about his work, his fondness for teaching, his love of New York City, and his traveling and collecting art with his wife. VERDICT An illuminating and well-paced documentary that effectively captures the artist's philosophy ("to inform and delight his audience") and shows a wide sampling of his output.
