Santa Croce lies on the River Arno, between Florence and Pisa. On one bank are the chromium tanners and on the other, in Ponte a Egola, the vegetable tanners. Graham Lampard visited the area to assess how the industry in this important region of Italy has coped with the recession Mention Florence and the words 'cradle of the Renaissance' trip off the tongue. Works of art inextricably associated with Florence, such as Botticelli's 'Birth of Venus' and Michelangelo's 'David', are symbols of the extraordinary creativity of the Tuscans.
