Siriopet tannery leads the way in Kazakhstan

The history of the Siriopet tannery dates back as far as 1831 when a tannery was first established on the site. Since then, the leather industry in Kazakhstan has suffered the same problems as many of its eastern European neighbours. The tannery gradually became very run down but then, during the 1960s, it was rebuilt. However, the crisis in the industry worsened and in 1993 the tannery closed and stood empty for six years.
