Sri Lanka gets tough on illegal imports

Players from Sri Lanka's footwear industry have written to the director general of customs demanding an end to the current flow of illegal imports. The industry, they claim, is losing $112.5 million a year in foreign exchange as a result of cheap products entering the country from China and India. According to estimates, the state has lost out on roughly LKR9 billion due to proper taxes not being paid on imported shoes.
