The International Leather Fair held until February 3 in Chennai in India has recorded an increase in the number of exhibitors of machinery and chemicals and a decrease in the number of tanners exhibiting. The fall of 20% of the Indian rupee against the dollar in a year made Indian leather more competitive on the outside market while local manufacturers are struggling to pay international market prices. On the other hand imports of hides, chemicals and foreign machines have become too expensive for local producers, which explain the increase in the number of local exhibitors and the decline in international representations. IILF is becoming increasingly an exhibition for local manufacturers.
