Many leaders find themselves at a crossroads in these turbulent times. This puts the spotlight on choices made, and roads taken and not taken. How can we develop the proper mind-set that leads to strong, sustainable choices? Leaders in the post-financial crash era must display resilience. And resilient leaders, contends John Baldoni, have "moxie," a 1930s-era term he has borrowed to describe people "who have an inner sense of toughness," who have gumption, guts, and determination. Leaders with moxie exhibit these four attributes: fire, drive, resilience, and street smarts; allied with competence, credibility, and confidence. Think of moxie also as an acronym, representing mindfulness, opportunity, X-factor, innovation, and engagement. Mindful leaders make sure they are doing meaningful work, making time for people close to them, and making time for themselves. They also learn to become more patient. "Leaders with moxie," Baldoni writes, "are those to whom others look for guidance as well as inspiration." In order to create and operate enterprises that produce value and are self-sustaining, Derek Lidow says entrepreneurs "must master five skills: self-awareness, the basics of enterprises, relationship building, motivation, and change leadership." To accomplish this, one needs what Lidow calls a "personal leadership strategy." He oudines and describes in detail five steps: tapping into core motivations, finding objective mentors, inventorying your traits, assessing your skills, and finally drafting your personal leadership strategy. "The objective of a personal leadership strategy," he writes, "is to decide on what actions you need to take to achieve your ambition of succeeding as an entrepreneurial leader. It is a document you create in order to hold yourself accountable for your own development."
