摘要

The idea of cops reaching out to mental health clinicians for help with their personal and professional stressors goes together about as well as the idea of fish riding bicycles. In days of old, voluntarily going to the department headshrinker was perceived by many as a career-killer. In fact, some cops may have an attitude along the lines of, "Real cops don't got to therapy; that's what alcohol is for." One valid reason that police officers stay away from therapy today is because some apparently well-meaning psychiatrists and psychologists violated their ethical duties of confidentiality and reported to the chief or sheriff about something that was said during therapy. That led to officers not being promoted be they may have been labeled as "crazy."
