Chilean fiber lines rise 68% YoY, surpass HFC lines

The surge in demand for reliable home internet connections since the start of the Covid-19 crisis has seen Chilean fiber-optic lines rise 68.2 percent year on year to account for 44.8 percent of the fixed broadband total, according to the latest update from telecommunications regulator Subtel. The number of fixed internet accesses in Chile climbed 12.5 percent year on year to over 3.9 million at the end of the first quarter of 2021, with fiber-based connections overtaking HFC for the first time to become the leading fixed technology used by Chileans. Atotal of 62.6 percent of the country's homes now have a fixed internet connection, up 7.8 percentage points compared to March 2020.
