Tigo Colombia deploys 'LatAm's first O-RAN network'

Millicom International Cellular (MIC) has announced that its Tigo Colombia subsidiary will become the first operator in Latin America to deploy Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture. The rollout will be carried out in partnership with Parallel Wireless and deliver 4G service coverage at 362 rural sites. The press release notes: 'O-RAN is the disaggregation of hardware and software components so that one supplier's software can be integrated with another supplier's radio and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) server hardware. This open architecture paves the way for faster mobile coverage roll-out to remote rural areas.'
