Algar Telecom, a full-service telecoms provider based in Uberlandia, in the state of Minas Gerais, has announced that it has agreed to acquire fellow regional operator Smart Telecomunicacoes (Smart Networks), in a deal valued at BRL49.8 million (US$12.9 million). Smart, which is based in Pernambuco, operates in the B2B segment. Algar has stated that the takeover is designed to boost its expansion plans in the North-east of Brazil.
